HOUSTON — A long-anticipated reconstruction project is set to begin Monday on Montrose Boulevard in Houston's Montrose neighborhood.

The project will impact the stretch of Montrose Boulevard from West Dallas Street to Allen Parkway, reducing traffic to one lane in each direction while construction is underway. Drivers who regularly use that route are urged to plan for delays.

The reconstruction is a partnership between the City of Houston and the Montrose Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone. According to the city, the goal is to improve pedestrian and vehicle safety, enhance drainage infrastructure, and reconfigure the roadway to support future growth.

If you’ve ever walked or biked along this stretch of Montrose, you know it can be tricky to navigate, with sidewalks cut off and no designated bike lanes. City officials say the project will address those issues.

The plan has drawn some opposition from residents over the years, particularly from those concerned about the historic oak trees lining the boulevard. The city said the trees will not be removed and the project includes planting more than 100 new trees while preserving the mature oaks along the corridor.

The Montrose Boulevard Improvement Project will initially focus on the section between West Dallas Street and Allen Parkway before extending to West Clay Street. Construction is expected to be completed by spring 2026.
